Audubon Park

A s a college student and Uptown resident, I often sought quiet refuge in Audubon Park. This peaceful, 340-acre urban respite across from Loyola and Tulane universities is set between St. Charles Avenue and the Mississippi River on land once owned by city founder Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne. Later a sugar plantation and the site of the 1884 World’s Fair, the park is named after famed naturalist and artist John James Audubon. His mother was a French/Spanish Creole from Louisiana, and he created much of his art in the Pelican State. Today, students, locals, and visitors come here to enjoy the wide-open spaces, oak-shaded lawns, and perfect picnic spots. Tennis, golf, swimming, and the acclaimed Audubon Zoo attract the young and the not-so-young. START: 6500 St. Charles Ave. Take the St. Charles streetcar to the Tulane/Loyola stop.
